Oct 11, 2026 Letters
Dear Editor,
I have just read a letter by Vishnu Bisram titled “Mahatma Gandhi’s role in ending indentureship”, I have no difficulty with Mr. Bisram’s praise of Gandhi for the role he played in bringing indentureship in the colonies to an end. As is known I am half Indo-Guyanese and half Afro-Guyanese, and can find no evidence that in Southern Africa where Gandhi campaigned, did he on any occasion address the discrimination and plight of the black Africans who suffered much more than the Indians in Southern Africa.
Let us be true to our history, even as I write this letter on the date that the British suspended our constitution – October 8, 1953, let the whole truth take us to new heights of understanding and finding the road to become one people, in one nation, with one destiny.
Yours truly,
Nigel Bacchus
