A mother of four was sentenced in absentia to four years’ imprisonment and fined $30,000, after she was convicted for trafficking cocaine. Magistrate Zamilla Ally-Seepaul handed down the sentence yesterday in the Sparendaam Magistrate’s Courts.
Zainab Muhammed, 30, of 197 Pineapple Street, East Ruimveldt, Georgetown was found guilty for having 1.426 kg of cocaine in her possession for the purpose of trafficking at the then Ogle International Airport, East Coast Demerara (ECD) on May 21, 2015.
She failed to turn up in court yesterday, causing a warrant to be issued for her arrest.
Initially, Muhammed had appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts, where she denied the allegation and was remanded to prison. However, the matter was later transferred to the East Demerara Magisterial District and she was granted bail by the High Court.
At yesterday’s court hearing, the trial commenced and ended after four witnesses were called by Police Prosecutor David Goodridge. Thereafter, the Magistrate made a ruling.
Attorney Dexter Todd, who made an appearance on behalf of Muhammed, arrived at court after the Magistrate had handed down her sentencing. Todd asked that he be recused from the matter.
According to reports, Muhammed was an outgoing passenger on a LIAT flight destined for Barbados. She was intercepted by security officials at the Ogle International Airport, East Coast Demerara (ECD) after acting suspiciously. She was then discovered with the cocaine strapped to her body and was subsequently arrested.
