Dear Editor,
There persist some rather irritating and annoying situations which I’m sure have been observed by the general public as well. I’m speaking about the many potholes which have been in existence on Hadfield Street between Lombard and Camp Streets and on Leopold Street between High and Lombard Streets for the past several months, and which continue to erode day by day and go unnoticed by the relevant authorities.
Now as a driver, and working in close proximity to these streets, it is imperative for me to be traversing these thoroughfares on a daily basis. This causes much irritating discomfort to me and to other commuters as well. Then there is the Budget issue. Now National Budget day 2017, is slated to be announced and read sometime in the month of December, which just happens to be one of the busiest months, if not the busiest month of the year.
My question is; with the Budget being read and debates to follow a week or so after are there any systems in place to deal with the heavy traffic congestion, which already exists around the Stabroek Market and Parliament building area; more so at a time when the height of the busy Christmas shopping season will be in full effect?
Finally there is the issue of the barricaded area around the Camp Street jail on Durban Street between Camp and John Streets. This is the southern boundary of the jail, which is manned by the joint services namely the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Defence Force. It is my humble opinion and of thousands of commuters too that this inconvenience should be ceased with immediate effect and the normal flow of traffic resumed forthright. It is my suggestion that if they were to have an alert foot patrols on these streets by the combined security forces on a 24hr basis then there would be no need for the continued massive discomfort faced by commuters and residents daily.
R. Green
