A Jamaican national appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman on a charge of trafficking narcotics.
It is alleged that Carlene Grant, on September 17, at Potaro Road, had 629 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in her possession for the purpose of trafficking.
Initially, Grant who was represented by Attorney Adrian Thompson, pleaded guilty to the charge after it was read to her in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
However, after a brief interaction with the woman and her attorney, Magistrate Latchman informed the court that a not guilty plea was entered by her on Grant’s behalf. The tearful Jamaican claimed that police ranks demanded $300,000 from her to suppress charges.
Grant, who is said to be three months’ pregnant, told the court that she was invited to Guyana. She explained that she was granted six months’ stay, but overstayed.
Her lawyer said that while in Guyana his client became involved in a relationship.
Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt opposed bail for the defendant based on the fact that no special reasons were provided to the court. Hunt further stated that the woman is a flight risk since she is not a Guyanese citizen.
She was remanded to prison and will make her next court appearance on September 26, before the Chief Magistrate for assignment.
