Dear Editor;
A former student of Berbice High School (BHS) has prepared and is now circulating a impressive 226 page glossy publication titled ACCOLADES TO BERBICE HIGH SCHOOL on its Centenary.
Celebrations. It is a fantastic work of Dr. Tulsi Dyal Singh, who highlighted activities of his alma mater and wrote about two hundred former students of the estimated 10,000 students who passed through the institution.
The glossy book no doubt took Dr. Singh a lengthy time to compile and no doubt cost him a fortune which he is distributing to former students and friends. It comprises six chapters and in the Preface. Tulsi said; “This book is about my relationship with Berbice High School and the impact it made on me. It focuses
primarily on my recollections from the years 1960 to 1967, when I was a student there and it exemplifies the reasons for my gratitude to the school and its teachers”
The first chapter highlighted the school’s Principals from the inception in 1916 to 1956. The brainchild of BHS was that of Rev. James Scrimgeour who was the second principal replacing Chester Arthur Pugsley. Miss Mabel Mac Kay was the first principal for Girls appointed in 1921 and the same year Rev
Neil Rattee was named principal and he served up to 1927 followed by Rev W.A. Hunter then Charles Wilson, James Cropper and Benjamin Oswald Yisu Das, Rev.James Dunn, Miss Mary Sherrick, Rev James Dickson, Rev. George Mackay, Kenneth Mc Kenzie, Rev. Daniel Firth and Rev. Dwight
Hamilton Pollard.
An entire chapter was devoted to Mr. Basil Beharry who served as Principal from 1956 to 1969 during Tulsi’s school days and was described as a second father not only to him, but scores of students. The publication highlighted some BHS personalities including James Ramphal, father of Sir Shridath Ramphal, Edgar Mittleholzer, famous writer, Ian Carew, Dr. Chait Bahadur Singh, Julius Nathoo, Romain Etwaroo, and several others. He also referred to well known families who had their children attended
BHS. Among them, the Hanomans, the Ramdeholls, La Bennett, Alphonsos, Barran, and Ganga and Pulwa Singh. The Singhs family has contributed significantly to the learning institution. The laboratory was named after Ganga Singh and centenary scholarships have been awarded in honour of Mrs. Pulwa Singh.
BHS celebrates its 100th anniversary. A week of activities was held between September 1 to 5 at the school’s campus in New Amsterdam. President David Granger, Foreign Minister, Carl Greenidge, a former student, and Minister of Education Rupert Roopnarine attended the official celebration
