President David Granger and his team declared the Rose Hall Town Week 2016 activities open in a grand ceremony that took place on the tarmac in Rose Hall, Corentyne on Wednesday.
The Town is celebrating its 46th anniversary after been granted the status of Township on the 20th of September, 1970.
The President was assisted by Minister of Social Protection Volda Lawrence; Regional Chairman, David Armogan; Mayor of the Township, Vijai Ramo, along with other executives.
Kicking off the grand ceremony was a march pass that commenced from the Anamaya Hospital to the Rose Hall Town Arch. The massive march pass saw hundreds of residents coming out to participate.
The town has planned a host of activities to commemorate the special milestone. Planned and coordinated by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, the activities planned for the two week’s programme includes, a Day of Sports, launching of a Booklet on the history of the Township, Career and Business Fair, Educational Competitions, Rose Hall Town Cuisine Competition, Opening of a Family Recreational Park, Medical Outreach Programme and the Launching of a Television Documentary.
Mr.Vijay Ramo the Mayor of the Township, said, “Rose Hall is rich in cultural history and potential to move Guyana forward. It is the job of every resident here to harness that potential.”
The President in his address to the gathering stated, that the town of Rose Hall played an integral role in the village movement and the shaping of Guyana’s history. He stressed that the “Town has the potential to lead economic development in the region”.
“Rose Hall is a powerful commercial dynamo in what is the third largest Town in the country. It is full of potential that can be harnessed to make Guyana bigger and better.”
President Granger further stressed on the importance of the local bodies working together to further develop Region Six.
“All three bodies have to work together—municipal, Regional and Central Government. Only then will we unlock the full potential this vast region possesses. And then you will see the improvements. Rose Hall might even become the alpha region. But this can only be done if we work together.”
He also commended the Town on their many achievements over the years.
Rose Hall was formerly known as Lot Number 9. It was purchased by Henry John Baird, a European planter on August 15, 1842 from its original owners who were Dutch planters.
On August 26, 1842, Baird sold the village to 57 former slaves who became shareholders of the village. For 63 years (1842-1905), the affairs of the village was conducted by one elected head who organized the others to do essential and urgent work such as digging of drains and canals, etc. In 1905, the village was put under the purview of the Local Government Board as a Country District.
Rice and sugar cane cultivation began in 1912. In 1957, a drainage pump was installed to solve the drainage issues. Rose Hall also boasted the first bank on the Corentyne, the Royal Bank of Canada. Mr. D.W. Fingal was the first Village Overseer from 1905-1918 while Dr. Godfrey was the first Chairman from 1905-1907.
In 1950, Rose Hall had 116 fully-occupied house lots in the central area and 114 in the Swamp Section. Mr. H.P. Benn had the distinction of serving as the village’s last Chairman in 1970 when the area was granted township status.
The first elected Mayor was Mr. George Trim.
