Following the Corentyne accident on Sunday that claimed two lives, survivors disclosed that they were heavily intoxicated at the time of the incident. 
Those dead were identified as Richard Ramnarine, 45, of No. 46 Village, Corentyne; and Ramesh Rampat, 23, also of No. 46 Village, Corentyne.
Injured in the accident were Prakash Gangaram, 24, of No. 46 Village, Corentyne; rice farmer Rameshwar Mangar, 31; and Mahendra Ramprakash, 24, also of No. 47 Village.
According to previous reports, the five occupants of a Toyota Spacio bearing license plate number PPP 4744 were proceeding along the Corentyne public road in the No. 50 Leeds area at a fast rate when they collided with a horse causing the driver to lose control of the car. The car then collided with a culvert and flipped several times before ending up in a nearby trench.
Kaieteur News spoke to survivor Prakash Gangaram called “Boyie” who told this publication that they were all heavily intoxicated at the time of the accident. According to him, they were drinking beers at the home of the now dead driver.
“We been drinking beers by Butcher and we left deh like about 8 to drop me home but we decide to go for a drive. When we reach bout like (Number 50 Village) side, the horse run out and Butcher couldn’t stop in time so we ram into it and all me can remember is waking up in de hospital next day.”
This publication also spoke to stepfather of the now dead Ramesh Rampat, Bashir Hussain, who relayed that they received the news of the accident after several calls to the young man’s phone went unanswered.
According to the stepfather, Ramesh left with friends but did not state where he was going.
“He mother birthday was Sunday so she cook up and he come home and eat then seh he going out with he friend them but he nah say where he going. Night time come now and he mother ah ring he phone and nah get no answer so we suspect something happen to he. Li’l bit after somebody call and tell we seh he in a accident and leh we come to the scene.”
Hussain stated that when they arrived at the scene of the accident, they were not able to view his body. He added that it was only after the body was taken to the Skeldon Hospital Mortuary that they able to identify his body.
Eyewitnesses described a horrific scene of blood and broken bones when the bodies were retrieved from the vehicle.
Investigations are still ongoing.
