Prompt response from the Guyana Fire Service, Onverwagt unit, on Monday afternoon, prevented extensive damage to a two-flat dwelling house situated at Lots One and Two, Public Road South, Hopetown, West Coast Berbice.
According to an eyewitness, he was at home when around 13:45 hours, he observed smoke gushing through a window on the bottom flat, at the western side of the building. He immediately raised an alarm, and ran to the building, bucket in hand, to render whatever assistance he could. Other young men from the neighborhood followed close behind to attack the raging fire.
No sooner had the bucket brigade gone into action, than a fire tender from the Onverwagt outpost arrived on the scene. With water readily available from the nearby canal, the firemen were able to quickly extinguish the blaze, and prevent extensive damage to the property. However, they left behind water soaked appliances and other household items.
The property owner, Lionel Young, in recent times has been away in the interior with his family. A caretaker has been occupying the bottom flat of the building. The individual, who was not at home when the fire started, went into a state of shock when she heard the news, and had to be rushed to the Fort Wellington Hospital.
There have been no reports of injuries. Officials had not yet been able to determine the cause of the fire.
According to a reliable source, Mr. Young would have been in Georgetown at the time of the fire.
