murder accused, Christopher Stanley, and as a consequence, he was committed to stand trial at the next session of the Demerara Criminal Assizes, at the Georgetown Supreme Court.
Stanley had been charged with the murder of Owen Brown also known as “Red Cap” or “Rastaman.’’ The incident is said to have occurred around 17:30 hours at 910 Rosemary Lane (Tiger Bay) Georgetown, on August 29, 2015.
The victim reportedly died on the spot after receiving about 19 stab wounds to several parts of his body. According to reports, the victim had moved to the area from Leopold Street, Georgetown, just six weeks prior to the incident.
The 49-year-old man is said to have been a tout, who worked outside nightspots at Main Street, Georgetown. The accused (Stanley) who was 19 years old at the time, was arrested and charged for the murder. He had also sustained injuries during the incident.
The accused initially appeared before Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan to answer to the murder charge. His Preliminary Inquiry, (PI) was conducted by Magistrate Judy Latchman. The matter was presented by Police Prosecutor Vishnu Hunt.
Yesterday, three final witnesses were called to the stand to give evidence in the matter – William Andrew Boyle, Chief Executive Officer,(CEO) of Eureka Medical Laboratory, Debbie Case and Nicola Clarke, who were neighbours of the accused at the time of the murder.
Following the testimonies, Magistrate Latchman took a brief adjournment.
After reviewing the evidence presented in the PI, she returned to the bench and ruled that “there is sufficient evidence against Christopher Stanley to commit him to stand trial in the High Court for the murder of Owen Brown, called Rastaman.”
At the time of the ruling, the accused had no legal representation. He silently stood in the prisoner’s dock.
