West Demerara Secondary School recently won the National Library and Guyana Publication Inc.’s Annual Inter-Secondary School debating competition beating North Georgetown Secondary in the final round.
Visiting Kaieteur News yesterday, the students expressed their elation at the achievement, describing it as both challenging and thrilling. First Speaker Shadelle Washington said that her toughest task was constructing the rebuttal after the initial arguments were over.
Second Speaker, Renado Mars, who was adjudged best speaker in the preliminaries and semi-final rounds, said that he enjoyed the journey and that he took pride in memorizing his argument.
Alecia Leander, the third speaker, said that participating in the event was challenging since she had to balance her time to both prepare for the competition and end of year examinations.
The final moot topic focused on the death penalty and the students were required to put forward arguments in support of imposing the penalty.
Head Teacher of the school, Harrinarine said that he was extremely proud of his students’ performance. He said the school has been doing well in debates and other extra-curricular activities, including athletics.
Additionally, he said that the school is improving its performance at the Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate examinations. Two of the top students in the Region came from the school. They were Diana Dookhan and Dudnauth Jodhan who both achieved eight grade ones.
The students said that they would not have achieved their success if it were not for the hard work and research done by Ms. Stephanie Paul, their English teacher.
