Four years for ‘notorious bandit’ who robbed gas station owner

The police will have some time to breathe after a man who was described as a notorious bandit was sent to jail.

Berbice, was yesterday sentenced to four years in jail by Magistrate Alex Moore when the accused re-appeared before him in the New Amsterdam Magistrate’s Court on a charge of robbery under arms and changed his plea to guilty.
The court heard that on Monday August 4th 2014 – while being in company of another individual and armed with a gun – Victor robbed Mohammed Ali, of $1.3M.
Ali, the owner of M Ali and Sons Supermarkets and Gas Station in New Amsterdam and of 19 Pope Street New Amsterdam, was on his way to the Scotiabank New Amsterdam branch at Strand New Amsterdam to deposit over $2.5M when he was robbed.
Victor had committed the robbery minutes after he had appeared in court on a number of robbery charges. He was just granted bail and was making his way to the car park when he committed the act.
The accused was positively identified and the sum of $1.3 M was found on his person.
Victor was arrested at around 13.00 hrs on the day in question. He and his accomplice had held Ali at gunpoint and relieved him of $2.5M. He was caught after diving into a swamp to elude police and public-spirited citizens. The other man who was with Victor, fled the scene.
Ali had stated that he had just exited his truck and was heading for the bank when two men approached him. One of the men pointed a gun at him while the other grabbed his money-bag.
The men darted through Chapel Street with the bag of money in their escape bid while he started to shout for ‘thief.’
The police had responded and joined in the chase and the men were spotted on Republic Road, a short distance away. One of the robbers fled into a churchyard while the other went in the direction of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) compound.
Victor, who it was that had fled in the direction of the RDC compound, eventually dived into a swamp, where he was apprehended with the money-bag, which was later found to contain $1.3M.
Victor was previously charged with robbery committed on businessman Raymond Arnold of 20-6 St John Street, New Amsterdam, of $1M and his car, valued at $2,750,000 which occurred on April 23, 2014.
He was also charged with robbing 29-year-old businessman Indernauth Bishram called ‘Ajay’ of Sun Shine Supermarket and Poultry Supply of 60 Public Road Cumberland East Canje of $1.3M, five days later on April 28, 2014.
In another matter, Victor was charged with robbery with aggravation committed on 84-year-old John Ramberrat on Monday 12th May, 2014.
He was recently sentenced to four years on a marijuana charge.
On June 24, 2015 at Sheet Anchor, East Canje he was nabbed with a bulky bag riding a bicycle. He was challenged and dropped the bag which contained leaves, seeds and stems of the marijuana plant. Whilst being taken into custody he pushed the police officer aside and escaped. He was subsequently recaptured and taken into custody.
He was granted bail. While on bail he was found with 14 pounds of marijuana in May 2016 at house No 2 village. He pleaded guilty and was jailed for four years and fined a total of $5,040,000.
He was also previously charged with riding a CG motorcycle without the necessary documents and helmet. He was in the process of escaping from the police when he crashed into a motor car. He was subsequently hospitalised.
