A 19-year-old labourer and his grandparents appeared yesterday before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court on a number of charges.
The court heard that the trio assaulted two police officers during the execution of their duties thus causing injuries to the ranks, and in the process a loaded firearm was discharged at the ranks after which the teen fled the scene.
Dinesh Persaud and his grandparents Seepersaud, a security guard and Kamla Persaud, a housewife, both 64, and of 69 Number One Settlement, Blairmont, West Bank Berbice, are accused of committing the act about 10.00 hrs on Sunday at Blairmont.
Dinesh Persaud is charged with assault with intent to prevent lawful apprehension. He is also charged with obstructing a peace officer. The elderly couple faces the same charges, jointly and separately.
Dinesh Persaud has been refused bail and remanded to jail while his grandparents were released on $30,000 bail each.
They will have to return to court on September 20.
In the meantime the police are seeking legal advice on further charges including discharging a loaded firearm.
The incident occurred when a passing police patrol spotted the teen who was wanted for a number of misdemeanours. The police tried to arrest him. However in the process of arresting the suspect his grandparents intervened.
But during a scuffle, the elderly couple managed to pull away their grandson from the arresting officers. It was then that the grandmother reportedly bit the officers on their thumbs.
When one of the constables attempted to re-arrest Persaud, the teen held the policeman’s firearm, causing six rounds to be discharged. Fortunately, no one was shot. Persaud then disappeared.
The two policemen (who were bitten) were treated at the Fort Wellington Hospital and discharged.
Acting on information the police swooped down on the teen’s grandparents’ home around 04:00 hrs and nabbed him in the house.
Prior to the bungled arrest, the two ranks were returning to the Blairmont Police Station with two men they had detained for break and enter and larceny at Number Four Settlement, Blairmont.
