One man is in custody as police continue to investigate the robbery of a popular Berbice businessman last Sunday morning by a lone gun-toting bandit dressed in shirt and tie.
According to reports, the sum lost is $18.5M and not $2M as was earlier reported.
According to reports, Ramlingan Mangali, a wholesaler and dry goods exporter/importer, and co-owner of Permaul’s Snackette of Albion Front, Corentyne, Berbice, was about to make a deposit at the Republic Bank Rose Hall branch when he was robbed. The incident occurred sometime between 10:20 and 10:30 hrs .
Mangali and his wife were on their way to church and had stopped by the bank to make the deposit. His wife was still in the vehicle and he had just got out when he was approached by the gunman who demanded that he hand over the bag containing the cash.
Mangali gave the robber the bag and the perpetrator made good his escape.
According to eyewitnesses, the robber ran through an alleyway before he was picked up by an accomplice on a motorcycle.
The businessman gave chase, but was unsuccessful in his bid to catch the thief.
Meanwhile, this is not the first time that Mangali has been robbed at that location.
In 2014, he was robbed of $10M as he was also preparing to make a deposit.
However, the bandits on that occasion had discharged a number of rounds in the air. The man and his brother had given chase in their vehicle, but had to abort the pursuit after the bandits had opened fire at them.
The police had recovered a motorbike and two men were subsequently arrested and charged for that robbery.
In the meantime, investigators are looking at a number of theories in the latest incident, including the possibility of some sort of collusion. They want to know how the bandit could be so precise, in knowing that the businessman would have been depositing that large quantity of cash at that precise time.
And the police are once again calling on business persons to be more security conscious whenever they are about to deposit money, especially in large quantities.
