The FIFA Referees Assistant Programme (RAF) continued yesterday at the Ministry
of Education ground, Carifesta Avenue. The five-day programme which is being facilitated by FIFA Regional Development Officer / Technical Instructor Peter Prendergast of Jamaica and FIFA Fitness Instructor Allan Brown of Costa Rica is designed to understand the revised and updated laws of the game and its interpretation.
The clinic commenced on Wednesday and targets the Elite Referees of the Guyana Football Federation. Speaking with Kaieteur Sport yesterday, Brown who works with Spanish and English speaking countries said that this is part of the development of the referees.
“We are looking for consistency in the application of the laws of game and fitness so part of the course is to evaluate the physical level of the referees in Guyana and the methodology used to prepare them. We are also looking at the level of instructions they are receiving from the people in charge,” he added.
Brown pointed out that another objective of the course is to enlighten the referees about the new changes to the laws and to review their performance. He stated that he is impressed with the fitness level of the local referees.
“The fitness level of the referees here is very good; it’s the best in the Caribbean. What we have seen from the referees on the international stage is that we need to work more on the technical aspects, i.e. the application of the laws on the field. So we will definitely look at that and will illustrate various drills to address this concern. This is an issue in the entire Caribbean,” he said adding that it’s all part of the referees development.”
Brown singled out Guyanese Sherwin Moore for special mention stating that he is one of the best referees in the region.
