The Preliminary Inquiry (PI) into the murder of businessman Farouk Ghanie Hamid continued yesterday
before Magistrate Judy Latchman in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Kemo Tyron Evans, of Water Street, Bagotstown, East Bank Demerara, and Floyd Anthony Rammit of Kaneville, East Bank Demerara, are currently on remanded for the indictable offence.
Vanetta Smith was called to testify on behalf of the prosecution by Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Vishnu Hunte. During her testimony, Smith became emotional which led to her crying and at some points murmuring for words.
Smith had testified at a previous court hearing, but completed her evidence in chief yesterday.
According to court facts, on April 15, 2015, the 56-year-old businessman left his home and went to his place of business on Regent Street. Hamid returned home around 18:00hrs on the said day. At about 20:00hrs, the two accused and another man were seen at his home. Sometime after, the men were seen by eyewitnesses, leaving Persaud’s home in a hurriedly manner.
On April 16, neighbours found Hamid’s body lying at the back of his yard in a pool of blood. There were reportedly wounds to his left side chest and cheek.
The police were summoned and found that the deceased man’s firearm, cell phone and other items were missing. The businessman was taken to the East Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
