Instructor caught with ganja at Camp Street jail – court hears
A man who teaches steel pan lessons to inmates at the Camp Street Prison was yesterday remanded to prison on a drug trafficking charge by Magistrate Fabayo Azore.
Shawn Koulen, 41, of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara, denied the charge which alleged that on August 11, at the Camp Street Prison, he had 400 grams of cannabis sativa (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose of trafficking.
It was revealed by Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones that Koulen frequently visits the prison to teach inmates. Jones said that on the day in question, police after receiving certain information, searched a haversack the defendant was carrying.
Jones said the illegal drug was found concealed in a yellow parcel inside the haversack. The prosecutor pointed out that prison officials never paid much attention to the man when he visited the facility because of what he came to do.
Jones pointed out that the defendant admitted that he owned the drug under caution.
The prosecutor strongly opposed bail for the defendant on the ground that no special reasons were provided to satisfy the court. The defendant told the court that he has three children and has another child on the way.
Meanwhile in another case, Jason Howard was released on $75,000 bail for a robbery he is accused of committing last Wednesday.
It is alleged that he robbed Charmaine Charles of a gold chain valued $25,000 in Georgetown. The charge also states that during, before or after the robbery he used personal violence against the woman. The unrepresented man denied the allegation read to him by Magistrate Azore.
Howard was instructed to make his next court appearance on September 12.
