National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed started the annual school vacation cycling programme at the National Park in 1976 and in 40 years he has not missed a single year, with the last 13 years being sponsored by Seven Seas.
Yesterday at the National Park last year’s winner Micheal Anthony defended his School Boys and Invitational Open 35-lap race by riding to victory in a time of 1:18:15.26 but it was not all smooth sailing for the back-to-back Champion.
Anthony, Marlon Williams who finished second, and Orville Hinds began the homestretch in a three man bunch, but with about 20 meters to the finish line, Anthony got out of his saddle and out-sprinted them to win the race for the second year in a row.
The entire School Vacation programme which began on July 11 will run for eight weeks and Hassan said he was satisfied with the overall standard of the riders.
“Failing to prepare is preparing to fail and I am pleased with what I am seeing here. Most of the National riders have come through this development programme and the fact that Micheal (Anthony) successfully defended his title shows that he has been training and working hard on his own,” Hassan who is running the oldest cycling nursery in the Caribbean as a part of the Carlton Wheelers Cycle Club, which is one of founder members of the GCF.
“This year I am trying to organize races for the riders because in the past we had one race meet for the year and I would see the riders again until the next year.
There is no cycling track or Veldrome to train on and would not encourage youngsters to ride on the road since its very dangerous due to reckless drivers,” Hassan lamented.
Hassan thanked Seven Seas for their continued support of this programme and the company was represented by its Products Specialist Nirvana Thakur and another representative who provided free samples of their products yesterday.
Hassan said today the Ricks & Sari Regan Rodrigues memorial Road Race in West Demerara will be held from 08:00hrs. The race starts at Wales, goes into La Parfaith Harmonie, then to Leonora and back to Wales.
At the presentation outstanding riders received trophies and prizes from Seven Seas. The races commenced in a drizzle at 09:00hrs with 6-9 BMX category.
