Guyana’s Trinidad-based, Lionel D’Andrade defended his Emancipation Freedom 5km Run in Sangre Grande, Trinidad in 17:20 with Trinidadians, Colin Pereira second in 17:30 and Joshua James (18:3) third in the 14th Edition of the race.
D’Andrade was made to work harder this time around, but showed superior tactics to pull away from his rivals with ease to defend his title. A victory next year for D’Andrade will see him take home the ‘Challenge Trophy’.
D’Andrade said experience was key to bringing home the gold. ”This year was more competitive but experience made me win this evening. I say I taking it easy today. It’s only two weeks now I start back training after a whole month’s rest,” he said.
“I just took my time and know when to make my move. I know when the guys tired and know then to make my move. I just run and hold with them and then tried something and realised they ain’t coming so experience gave me a win,” D’Andrade explained.
The Emancipation Freedom run is in celebration of Trinidad & Tobago’s Emancipation Day holiday. The Road Race had a turnout of 200 participants running for freedom as they celebrated Emancipation Day.
