A 32-year-old mason was yesterday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan, after he denied a drug trafficking charge, when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Lennox Goodman of Archer Road, Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo is accused of having 530 grams of cannabis in his possession for the purpose of trafficking on July 23, last, at Brickdam, Georgetown.
Attorney Keavon Bess made an application for his client to be released on reasonable bail.
Bess told the court that his client is the sole breadwinner for his family which comprises two minor children, his mother and disabled sister. The lawyer said that Goodman is not a flight risk and has no previous or pending court matters.
However, Police Prosecutor, Deniro Jones, strongly opposed bail for the defendant on the grounds that police found the narcotic in a bag Goodman was carrying. Jones also pointed out that the Attorney failed to provide special reasons for bail to be considered for the offence. The Prosecutor said that an analyst certificate is still outstanding from the case file.
The Chief Magistrate upheld the objection put forward by the Prosecutor and remanded Goodman to prison until August 25, when the matter will be called for reports.
