Four-time champions Christianburg / Wismar produced their best performance to date to inflict a crushing 6-0 win over Region 6 champion Tutorial in quarter-final action of this year’s Digicel Schools Football Championship yesterday, at the Leonora Synthetic Track facility.
On target for the winners was Omar Brewley, who fired in a brace in the 17th and 72nd minutes, while Amar Jones (48th), Antwaine Gill (65th), Jamaine Kingston (85th) and Shaquille Campbell (89th) completed their tally.
In the other quarter-final matchup, Region 5 champions Bush Lot Secondary cruised past Soesdyke by a 3-1 margin thanks to a hat-trick from Titus Webster, who netted in the 4th, 14th and 80th minutes, while Tyrone Khan’s 24th minute strike was the lone response for Soesdyke.
In the feature encounter, Brewley fresh off national duty with the Under-17 squad was quickly into stride as Christiaburg / Wismar went on the ofensive from the start and applied tremendous pressure on their opponents.
First Tutorial goalkeeper was called upon to make a magnificent save to avert a goal after he was caught off his line and a shot from long range had to be punched out, before a scorching header hit the crossbar and rebounded into play.
However, the relentless nature of Christianburg / Wismar attack eventually paid off when Brewley collected a pass from the right flank, before cutting inside to deliver a left-foot curler of sheer class into the top right hand corner of the goal, leaving the goalkeeper with no chance of saving.
The half came with no team managing to score and the champs clinging to a slim 1-0 advantage. The start of the second period brought no reprieve for Tutorial as Christianburg / Wismar continued their unrelenting forays and gained a second goal when Jones leaped high in the air to head past the goalkeeper.
Gill then made it 3-0 when he scored a fortuitous goal after being in the path of a rebound off an opposing player only to see the ball hit his foot and land over the goalline.
Brewley, who must have been a welcome return to the team that appeared to lack potency up frnt then showed why he is regarded as one of the future stars in the game when he received a bouncing pass from the right side, controlled it beautifully, before smashing a fierce right-footer into the goal to make it 4-0.
With time running out, Tutorial pushed more players forward, but that made them even more vulnerable and were punished for their bold tactics as Christianburg / Wismar fired in two more goals through Kingston, who hit in from close range and Campbell, a powerful strike from about 25 metres out to seal victory.
Earlier, Bush Lot controlled proceedings from start to finish in an impressive display.
Webster opened with a thunderous shot after collecting a pass on the right side to make it 1-0 early and returned ten minutes later to tap in a long ball after the advancing goalkeeper had floored his defender in a mixup.
The speedy Khan then pulled one back after outracing his marker, before placing a shot into the far corner.
Webster then sealed the deal deep in the final period poking in a fumble following a fierce strike from long range to secure a semi-final spot.
The semifinals are set for tomorrow at the same venue starting from 4:00pm.
