Chase Academy of Georgetown overcame a spirited Annai
side to secure a place in the final four when the Digicel Schools football championship continued on Sunday at St. Ignatius Sports ground in Lethem.
A large and colourful crowd braved some showers to cheer on the home side, but it was the visitors who took the lead as their captain Jeremy Garett converted from the spot after his team won a penalty in the 14th minute.
Kelsey Benjamin forced a save from Annai’s goalkeeper Neil Allicock, while Job Caesar sent his shot wide after he made a decent effort to get into the box. Stuart Edwards had Annai’s first real chance to score but Chase goalkeeper Kevis Fraser didn’t had much trouble in keeping out his weak shot.
Annai got better as they game progressed and together with Chase gave the fans much excitement. Annai increased their pace considerably in search of an equaliser and Vasco Cabal had a chance to draw them level but sent his shot over the bar after receiving a pass from Orville Daniels as Chase went to the break enjoying a 1-0 lead.
However, their advantage was short-lived as Annai found the equaliser one minute into the second half. Nestor Brown lofted his free kick into the area and Cabral managed to escape his marker and brilliantly headed home. The goal sparked wild celebrations which lifted Annai’s confidence but Chase defence stood firm. Allicock recovered quickly to deny Benjamin before Caesar who had a fair chance to score sent his shot wide of the uprights. Annai had the best opportunity for that period, but with only the keeper to beat Sheral Daniels went way off target.
As the loud cheers continued, both teams made several raids at goal but just couldn’t finish. Chase were better in maintaining their concentration and this had a huge impact on the outcome. Annai left striker Stephon Reynolds unmarked inside the area and paid for the error. Rashan Rich lofted the ball in the box and Reynolds headed home to give his team the lead in the 74th. Annai spirit dropped considerably- Chase booked their ticket to the next stage.
