Police have detained two speedboat operators after a collision in the Moruca River, North West District, left a 66-year-old man dead.
Police said that the two vessels were heading in opposite directions in the river at around 09.40 hrs on Saturday, when they ended in each other’s paths and collided.
The crash left passenger Neville Friendz, a pensioner, with severe injuries. He was taken to a hospital at Moruca where he succumbed.
Police are still trying to ascertain whether the boat captains were licensed.
Last month, Boris Blair, a 24-year-old security guard, was killed after the boat in which he was a passenger, capsized after crashing into an object in the Mazaruni River.
A police source said that based on reports, the boat collided with a tree that was floating in the river and then capsized.
In January, two Guyanese, including a 13-year-old girl, perished after the boat they were traveling in sank in the Atlantic Ocean on its way to Mabaruma from neighbouring Venezuela.
And in April, Mohamed Shameer, 58, died after a boat that a relative was travelling in crashed into Sahameer’s ballahoo at Jacklow, Lower Pomeroon.
