Businessman Neezam Khan, who was shot on June 6, 2015, when gun-toting bandits robbed him at his snackette at Grove, East Bank Demerara, testified yesterday before Chief Magistrate Ann Mc Lennan.
Curtis Vasconcellos, 21, of 52 Remus Street, Agricola, and Orin Peters 21, of Agricola are currently on trial for the offences of robbery under-arms and attempted murder committed on Khan.
It is alleged that while in the company of others and armed with a gun they robbed Khan of a gold chain valued $200,000 and a gold ring valued $500,000.
They are also accused of discharging a loaded firearm at Khan with intent to murder him.
During the foiled robbery, Michael Grant, 18, of Agricola, East Bank Demerara who was reportedly an accomplice of the two, was shot dead by the businessman.
After giving his testimony, Khan was cross examined by attorneys for both accused. Vasconcellos was represented by Attorney Dexter Todd while George Thomas appeared on behalf for Peters.
According to reports, Neezam Khan, and some colleagues were outside the snackette of which Khan is the proprietor, when four young men on two CG motorcycles rode up.
One of the men, armed with a handgun, held up the businessman and relieved him of the items mentioned in the charge. Before the bandits could have escaped with the loot, Khan opened fire on them.
Vasconcellos tried to escape, but was later found lying not too far from the crime scene. He was then treated at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre.
Attorney Todd had argued that there are disputes, as it relates to the police’s facts and investigation. He had told the court that his client was the rider of a CG motorcycle that was parked at the head of Diamond, East Bank Demerara. Upon hearing the gunshot, the attorney said, his client attempted to ride away.
Todd had explained that the only evidence the police is using to link his client to the allegation, is the fact that he was picked out in an identification (ID) parade.
Attorney Peter Hugh is representing the prosecution.
The matter has been adjourned until July 12.
