The Tourism and Hospitality Association of Guyana (THAG) on Thursday, June 30, held its 23rd Annual General Meeting for the purpose of electing a new Executive Council at the Guyana Marriott Hotel, Georgetown.
The Association’s new President is Mrs Andrea de Caires of the Atta Rainforest Lodge, while the Vice President is Ms Susan Isaacs the General Manager of Pegasus Hotel Guyana. Mr. Mitra Ramkumar, the Finance Controller of Roraima Airways Inc, is now THAG’s treasurer, while new Committee Members are Kevin Daby, Mrs Teri O’Brien, Mrs Camille Boodhoo and Alvin Wilson.
The multi-faceted Executive of personnel represents a cross-section of the Association’s membership that shares expertise in hospitality, tourism, management, sales and marketing as well as financial management. Their contributions will be beneficial to the Association as we attend to areas of need, address industry concerns and seek new prospects for expansion.
Mrs de Caires, in her first presentation to the membership as President of THAG, thanked the outgoing former president, Mr Shaun McGrath for his sterling contribution to THAG and highlighted the strides he made to enhance the programme and reach of the association.
Mrs de Caires noted that the intention of the new Executive would be to continue the work that was started two years ago and to build on it. She implored the members to participate in the Association’s activities, thereby achieving more on the membership’s behalf.
It was not about the Executive, she explained, but more about reflecting the needs of the Association’s members and achieving goals set to build the sector.
“It will be an exciting year ahead but a challenging one as well, that will require the membership’s support and recommendations to find solutions to problems as they arise. We see this as a wonderful opportunity for the New Executive.”
McGrath promised to continue lending his support to the newly elected Executive but noted that the members also had a role to play in ensuring the success of these initiatives. He implored the membership to not stand by as observers of the process but to “buckle down, get involved, get on board and assist the Association where possible”.
Mr McGrath, on behalf of the outgoing Executive, thanked telecommunications giant GTT for its continued sponsorship of THAG and the Tourism Industry. In addition he also thanked Ram and McRae, THAG’s Auditors, for their outstanding contribution to the Association over the years.
Shortly after McGrath’s address, the membership voted unanimously to retain Ram and McRae as the Auditors for the upcoming financial year.
