It has been reported that the head teacher of the Silver Hill Primary School on the Soesdyke/Linden Highway has not reported for duty at the school since last Monday nor has she made contact with staff regarding her whereabouts.
It is common that during this stage of the school term that the students would be engaged in their end of year examinations. As a result of the HM’s absence this exercise has stalled.
Concerned parents and members of the Parent-Teachers’ Association of the school who made contact with Kaieteur News yesterday, confirmed the woman’s absence.
The dismayed parents said that examinations were to begin last Monday. The HM had reportedly collected the prepared test questions last week from the teachers with the intention to go and have the official examination papers printed.
According to one parent, since leaving, no form of communication has been made with the school or the PTA.
The HM’s absence has resulted in the office being closed since Monday. The teachers are unable to sign in their time stamps and mark their class registers. The parents find the situation unacceptable and untenable.
The disturbed parents are disappointed with the HM’s actions since it appears as though she has no consideration for the distance children are forced to commute from home to school, then to be told that their test has been postponed. The children therefore have nothing to do all day.
According to one mother, she is tired of hearing her child telling her that test has been postponed until the next day, only to hear the same words the following day. The parents are of the opinion that the students will suffer due to this insensitive delay.
Another parent expressed the view that it is unfair for the HM to be receiving a monthly salary to do her job but chose to abandon the school at this critical time.
One member of the PTA informed Kaieteur News that the school has several other problems; one such issue being the empty treasury of the PTA. Consequently the school cannot fund any extra-curricular activities for the students.
Also, it was reported that the toilet facility designated for teachers is in a deplorable state.
One member of the PTA stated that contact was made with the Ministry of Education and they have promised to begin investigating the matter.

This a strange situation that should never have happened. Any systém has to have a system of disaster recovery. One does not know the emergency the head teacher is facing but whatever it is, it should not prevent the ship from sailing. My question is who is the next in line and what does the organizational chart of the school like. From what is stated it seems that the head teacher is the custodian of everything and this a poor reflection of the school as well as the regional education office which has oversight and supervisory functions.
