HiFeng Su retained his rich vein of form and one day after defeating veteran player, Errol Tiwari, replicated the feat with an upset victory over Anthony Drayton to signal an ominous intention to clinch the spoils when the ‘Andrew Arts Memorial’ chess tournament continued at the National Resource Center, Woolford Avenue, last Sunday afternoon.
It was the second upset of the day after Pedro Joshua played the game of his life to defeat Woman Candidate Master (WCM) Maria Verona Thomas to leave the tournament wide open going into the penultimate day next Saturday morning.
HiFeng Su also registered a win over Ryan Singh to improve his tally to 3 points, a position he shares with Taffin Khan who, amidst those upsets, kept his composure to register wins over Rashad Hussain and Pedro Joshua. Drayton recovered from that defeat to inflict similar pains on Neto and hovers 1 point shy of the joint leaders.
Frankie Farley rebounded from a loss to Drayton on the inaugural day to defeat Sheriffa Ali, while benefiting from a walk over in the final game of the day, while Saeed Ali defeated Ryan Goliath before losing to Ryan Singh. The former player recouped some pride with a win over Jessica Callender.
The tournament still remains wide open and the players convene next Saturday and Sunday at 09:30hrs where the winner will be established. The GCF wishes to express its gratitude to its benefactor, Andrew Arts, for its generous patronage.
