Damning accusations against Region 1 Chairman

It is remarkable that the Regional Chairman of Region 1 has found some mouth now to criticize systems in Region 1. Systems which he was very much involved in – he was one of the policy-makers during the widespread incompetence when his party was in power.
The RC is accustomed to his party awarding contracts to friends of the PPP. As a result of this, it seems that Region 1 has been willed over to only certain contractors from back in time. The RC is fully aware of all of this but he is making a noise to make it appear that he is above board and suddenly works are not progressing. That may be true. More should have been done since the new Government took office.
For example, certain officials whose allegiance is ‘we know where’, should not be left in those positions to stagnate progress. The new administration inherited:
1. The contractor for the Pure Water Supply who arbitrarily decided that one side of the road must get water one day and the other side the next day. Residents have to be crossing the road to collect water so that they always have a supply of this precious commodity in their homes;
2. The electricity system which has a contractor (uncle of a former PPP REO who feathered his nest so well that he is still living off the proceeds);
3. The Barabina Road (again courtesy of a former PPP Regional Chairman) whose brilliant idea of a concrete bridge (Kumaka Bridge) is the reason that the water is backing up and causes the flooding of the roadway;
4. A local Methuselah whose nephew (PPP) put him in charge of the Kumaka revetment project. He is still employed complete with an ATV to ride around all day;
5. A group of workers who make no effort to hide the fact that they support the PPP and so are not in the game of promoting any development in Region 1;
6. An arrangement whereby a known PPP cohort who is a teacher is allowed to live in the residence owned by the State and who hardly ever turns up to her assigned duties. Guess she has the coverage of her protector who is very senior in the PPP
7. Many more instances which could be mentioned.
However, the new administration seems to think that keeping certain people in certain positions will cause their allegiance to change overnight. Wake up people, this will not happen. These people are being paid hefty salaries to stagnate the plans for development in the Region. They are not taking instructions from the Government and they are being paid to sit there and stagnate Guyana’s progress Does it make sense?
Region 1 needs a changing of the guard. This is not about ‘witch hunting’. It is about sensible planning and placement of officials who are serious about promoting development in the Region and ultimately the country. Why does the Regional Health Officer have to have a rented car? Was there not an ATV at the Hospital?
The Regional Chairman speaks about unity when he is instructed so to do and then out of the other end of his mouth he does the opposite. Who visits communities before Ministers’ visit and tells them not to show up? Who encourages villages to post banners saying that they do not want Ministers to visit their area? Who is fooling these people? Why are these people being blindfolded?
Is it true that Food for the Poor sends stuff to a certain PPP businessman at Kumaka and those are put to the purpose to which they should? I sure hope not. Who has the solar panels for a certain Government Project in Wauna?
The RC is such a person now but when he was the Social Worker in the Dept of Education, he allegedly covered up a situation that may need to be researched. The former AREO is being sent back to Region 1 as DREO. His close ones get contracts from the Government. Nepotism? Yet the current administration sees it fit to re-instate him. Something stinks to the high heavens here. Will this individual promote any development in Region One when he was posted there to serve the will of his PPP masters? Would someone ask the Minister of Communities to comment on this?
Now that the message is clear for us to see – Region 1’s best bet is to shut up, take the political bashing, do not look forward to any progress because the party we voted for seems to be in bed with the party we voted against. We are the laughing stock. More to come.
