Human Rights which persons are entitled remain secured when there are dedicated agents in society advocating for the recognition of such rights. By virtue of the Constitution of Guyana, one such right of Guyanese is the right to work.
In enjoying this right, workers need agents who will advocate collectively for their rights not only to work, but to be afforded safe, clean and productive working environments. This includes being remunerated relative to the work performed as well. It is under these tenets and more that Trade Unionism was born.
The Guyana Public Service Union (GPSU) is one such agent which prides itself in fighting for the rights of workers in the public sector. The union will be celebrating 93 years of representing and negotiating for public servants’ rights, working conditions, wages and salaries.
A union statement indicated that the body has over the years made many strides at great sacrifice, and has waded through tough periods from the days of colonization, internal self-government and political independence.
The union said some of its greatest achievements were realized during the Presidency of the late Forbes Burnham.
“Notable achievements include but are not limited to: (1) Land to the Civil Service Association; (2) Land for Recreational facilities; (3) five day work week; (4) Avoidance and settlement of disputes agreement; (5) Making collective agreements legally binding; (6) one month salary tax free vacation allowance; (7) Agency Shop Agreement and the Amendment to the constitution to facilitate the Public Service Appellate Tribunal.
Under the motto “Justice for the public employee” the 93-year-old organization has suffered setbacks and abuse. Its Agency Shop Agreement was last violated in 2000 and has not been restored to date. The Avoidance and Settlement of Disputes Agreement was continuously abused. It is expected that due to this new era of political governance that its recreational facilities will be restored and recognized.
The organization said it remains resolute in its duty to the public sector workers of Guyana. It is duty bound and determined to restore the valuable achievements made possible by its forefathers. Owing to the unity of purpose within the membership and leadership greater achievements and success stories lay ahead.
