Explosive experts are saying that it was nothing short of “a miracle” that the fragmentation grenade that was thrown last Saturday night in close proximity to Kaieteur News failed to explode.
This was relayed to Kaieteur News yesterday by senior police officials who are trying to track down the perpetrators, who hurled the device from a grey-coloured vehicle without number plates.
“The experts are puzzled…they say it’s a miracle that the grenade didn’t detonate,” one official said.
Crime Chief Wendell Blanhum said that the device was a ‘live’ fragmentation grenade and that the pin had already been detached.
Fragmentation grenades shatter on impact, with the fragments shooting out with great force in different directions.
Blanhum said that investigators are still trying to trace the vehicle from which the grenade was thrown. He said police have examined footage from CCTV cameras at Kaieteur News.
At around 22.00 hrs on Saturday, Kaieteur News publisher Glenn Lall and other staffers were outside the newspaper’s Saffon Street building participating in a wake for Assistant Editor Dale Andrews, when a security staffer heard an unusual sound near Mr. Lall’s Lexus, which was parked on the western side of the street.
Thinking at first that someone had shattered one of the windows, the staffer checked the vehicle, but observed no damage. However, on checking the front of the Lexus, the staffer spotted the grenade lying near one of the front tyres.
The police were immediately notified.
Video footage from a Kaieteur News CCTV camera shows the grey-coloured vehicle, which is heading north, slowing as it approaches Mr. Lall’s vehicle. The occupants then accelerated after the device was thrown.
Speaking to reporters shortly after midnight; Commander of ‘A’ Division, Clifton Hicken said that sometime around 22:30 hrs, the Ruimveldt police station received a call stating that a “bomb was thrown at Kaieteur News”.
Hicken related that after he was made aware of the situation, he then contacted the supervising officer at Ruimveldt Police Station and subsequently made his way to Kaieteur News. He continued that upon arriving at the scene, they “discovered a grenade” and the bomb experts were summoned.
Hicken noted that the experts were able to remove the grenade while conducting Standard Operating Procedures that are followed whenever a grenade is found. He continued that the grenade was found to be unstable as the pin was removed.
Hicken said that police reviewed footage from a Kaieteur News surveillance camera and observed a heavily tinted “grey, Spacio like vehicle” slow up at Mr. Lall’s vehicle. “Someone’s hand stretched out and a grenade was thrown towards the vehicle.”
The commander noted that all efforts will be made to apprehend any possible suspects, including the revision of all CCTV camera footage in the immediate area.
Hicken stated that the area would be cordoned off for the next 24 hours.

Rule no one out, because KN has been an equal opportunity critic of government shenanigans and may well have mashed some sensitive toes in recent weeks, just as it did for the last 15 years!
I would like to suggest, that all heavily tinted vehicles be pulled off the Streets.I may be wrong, but I believe, there is a law pertaining to these tinted vehicles. The police MUST ENFORCE THE LAW NOW.This seems to be a NEW TREND which is HIGHLY DANGEROUS ,throwing EXPLOSIVES around, and MUST be PLUCKED in the BUD NOW..
I remember some years ago,Kaieteur News was targeted, when many workers lost their lives at another location.I cannot remember now,if anyone was held responsible and charged.Anyway,I hope this trend will be stopped in its tracks.
