St. Ann’s Orphanage gets 35 new beds from Canadian Diaspora

One of the Canada-based Guyanese makes the presentation to the head of the orphanage.

To celebrate Guyana’s Golden Jubilee the Guyanese Canadians – GT 50 group galvanised over 300 of their families, friends, co-workers and neighbours, in Canada, to donate 35 new beds to the St. Ann’s Orphanage in Thomas Street, Georgetown.

The girls and their caregivers were presented with this generous gift by five representatives of the group from Canada.
Minister within the Ministry of Education, Nicolette Henry attended the presentation ceremony. She reinforced her commitment to inspiring the youth of Guyana.
While reflecting on the theme on the Golden Jubilee of Independence, Minister Henry highlighted the sense of national pride at this historic time especially at the Flag Raising. “This is the legacy of the celebrations,” she said.
The Minister also encouraged the children at the orphanage to work hard, since they can achieve great things despite their current situation.
Aside from celebrating Guyana’s 50th Independence Anniversary, Guyanese Canadians – GT 50 group spokesperson, Sheryl Barry explained that the trip is also aimed at promoting the group’s philanthropic spirit in Guyana.
“We have spoken with Sister Claudiet Jones, the Director of St. Ann’s Orphanage and with her blessings; we have developed a programme called #GuyCansponsorAGIRL, where we will be asking our friends, families, coworkers and neighbours to sponsor a girl from the Orphanage.
“In this programme we will provide the necessities that a girl needs and any other items on her wish list,” she said.
The group planned a series of events in Guyana, all geared towards fostering a closer relationship between the Guyanese Canadian Diaspora and those at home.
