Kaieteur News – Suriname’s Minister of Oil, Gas and Environment, Patrick Loys Brunings, says his government is prepared to establish a technical team with Guyana to examine President Dr. Irfaan Ali’s proposal to partner on Guyana’s planned second gas-to-energy (GTE) project which will be located in Berbice, Region Six.
Speaking on the sidelines of the Guyana Energy Conference and Supply Chain Expo 2026, last week at the Guyana Marriott Hotel in Georgetown, Brunings said, “First of all, I think it’s very necessary that we install a technical team… So, we are ready to install a team very soon, within a month. So that this joint technical team can look at all these opportunities.”
He explained that the team would assess potential gas reserves on both sides of the border, including volumes and technical specifications, before determining how the resource could be monetised.
“So, we are ready to install a team very soon, within a month, so that this joint technical team can look at all these opportunities. Where can we find gas, how can we combine, eventually, the gas occurrences on both sides of the border, what are the volumes we’re talking about, pressures, things like so a little bit technical,” he said.
The minister added that other key areas the team will have to investigate is to, “Look, okay, where do we bring this gas…how can both countries maximise this opportunity, especially from Suriname side, we have to see, can we take can we offtake this gas, and what will we use it for?”
He added that the arrangement will be formalised through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which officials are currently drafting. Brunings stated, “So full commitment from our side, and we make want to make use of this, the opportunities that are laying out there.”
The Surinamese minister’s comment come days after President Ali at the opening of the energy conference made the call to collaborate with Suriname.
President Ali told the attendees that discussions are underway for a joint initiative that could see gas from both countries being used for a larger-scale project in Berbice. He said, “And on the path of integration for Berbice gas project we want to do this with our friends in Suriname and we are hoping that our friends in Suriname can make a decision to join us by bringing their gas with our gas so that we can move from a medium size project to a larger scale project for both of our countries and the region.”
The government had signalled its plans for a second GTE project, even as the first project at Wales West Bank Demerara is still to be completed. President Ali had stated that before the end of the decade, a second GTE pipeline routed through Berbice would be constructed.
The Guyanese head-of-state stressed that the proposed partnership with Suriname is time-sensitive, with investors awaiting clarity. “We are hoping that very quickly we can have some decisions, because our investors are waiting on those decisions and those decisions are critical for your future and our future,” he said.
