Rupert Perry continued his excellent form after returning to competitive track and field last year and Kenisha Phillips sprinted to a double on Sunday in the Golden Jubilee Independence Day of Sports, which was a collaborative effort between the Athletic Association of Guyana (AAG) and an ex-athletes association based in the United States.
Perry blasted 10.1 seconds at the National Track and Field Centre at Leonora to beat team-mate, Akeem Stewart (10.3s) and Kevin Abbensetts (10.4s) respectively. The Guyana Defense Force (GDF) ensured its ascendancy is to be taken seriously when Natricia Hooper also sprinted to the double among the Women.
Hooper ran 11.4 seconds to win the female version of the 100m ahead of Aniqua Powley (11.7s) and Kezia Bess (12.1s). Hooper followed that up with victory in the 200m.
The High School prodigy, Kenesha Phillips completed a similar feat in the Girls 14-16 category in the 200m and 400m. The win were comfortable for Phillips, who false started in the 100m that prevented what could have been a sprint treble.
In arguably the race of the day, Arinze Chance out-leaned Kareem Purch (49.0s) to win the 400m in 48.9 seconds. Wayne Harlequin finished third in 49.3 seconds.
In the 400m Women’s race, Andrea Foster defeated Hooper with a 59:00 seconds performance.
Hooper had clocked 59.4s for second while Bess placed third in 1:01.3s. The organisers had held a 10km Road Race earlier on Sunday.
