Dyna’s Ravens squandered an 11-point fourth quarter lead Saturday night at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to hand Washington DC Jammers a narrow victory in the first of a four-game series against Guyana’s top clubs that continued last night.
Washington DC Jammers won 74-69 with Semaj Inge scoring 21 points with the shooting guard, Kerron McKenzie adding 12 and Rodney Mickens 10 points respectively.
For Ravens, which had finished fourth in the National Basketball Club Championships: Road to Mecca III; forward, Jermaine Slater and guard, Nikkoloi Smith finished with 13 points apiece as shooting guard, Ryan Stephney added 12 points.
Trailing 50-61, with 8:26 remaining on the game clock, McKenzie started the comeback with back-to-back three-pointers – that along with a layup from veteran centre, Lancelot Loncke motored Jammers to an 8-0 run that cut the deficit.
Ravens battled back with a 4-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, which helped them hold on to 65-58 points lead. However the visitors took the lead for the first time in the period with a 7-1 run as Ravens defense failed to stop their offensive blitz.
Mickens landed big three-point jumpers to help Jammers to a 66-65 lead with 3:20 on the clock.
Ravens offense grinded to a halt with Jammers racing to victory on an 8-4 run with aggression at the rim that placed them constantly at the charity stripe.
Jammers had outscored Ravens 18-16 at the end of the first period. The visitors then extended their advantage, outshooting Ravens 18-15 to lead 36-31 at halftime. The momentum changed in the pivotal third period with Ravens taking a 55-50 lead.
Ravens out-hustling Jammers 24-14 in the penultimate period. Stephney led the way with eight points while Slater and Vincent scored six and four points apiece, but Ravens just could not hold on in the deciding period to ensure the visitors defeat.
In the first exhibition game, Georgetown Technical Institute blew away the Bishops’ High School 92-47.
