In an effort to highlight the plight of the elderly in Guyana after 50 years as an Independent nation, 62-year-old Ras Aaron Blackman will compete in Sunday’s Golden Jubilee 10K road race which starts at 06:00hrs from the Square of the Revolution.
Blackman says he was prompted to run the race to highlight the plight of the elderly, who should be guiding the young generation to help them to develop community programmes which will facilitate them growing into enterprising individuals, instead of having to cope with several social ills.
The elderly is plagued by domestic violence, unemployment, absence of recreational activities (social & cultural), early retirement, homelessness and neglect.
Blackman is convinced that there is a need to organize senior citizens’ groups in communities across Guyana to ensure that the good life is promised to all.
“These elderly people possess great skills that they can share with the youth but this will not be easy if Government does provide funding and facilities for training of our youths,” Blackman pointed out.
Blackman is being sponsored by Nail Boutique, Urban Salon, Invoginn on South Road and Trendsetter Barber shop of Golden Grove East Coast Demerara.
