With Guyana celebrating its 50th Independence Anniversary this year the annual Independence T20 Cricket competition, which is jointly organized by the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) and the Berbice Chamber of Commerce and Development Association (BCCDA), promises to be the biggest so far.
This is the fourth edition of the competition and the organisers promise to capitalise on the massive countrywide celebrations to make the competition one to remember. The activity will also form part of the calendar of activity on the Regional Independence programme.
The launching was successfully held on Tuesday at the BCB office at Charlotte Street New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The one day cricket spectacle will be held on Sunday May 29th at the Rose Hall Community Centre ground with the finals set to be played under lights.
Speaking at the launching ceremony, president of the BCCDA Mr. Roopnarine Rajnauth expressed happiness and delight to be partnering once again with a prominent organisation such as the BCB to do something tangible like organizing the prestigious competition.
He said that the BCCDA and its members recognized the importance of sports in nation building and blending and see the joint venture as worthwhile.
He said that so far the activity has been successful and see no difference this year with even more success envisaged.
Also speaking was Secretary of the BCB, Angela Haniff, who expressed pleasure on behalf of the Board that the two prestigious Non-Government Organisation can once again come together to organise the competition, which is one of the most sought after and better organised in Guyana.
The organisers have promised an even more exciting tournament this year. The event will feature four top T20 teams in the county with each team expected to feature one guest player.
The teams expected to take part are Upper Corentyne / Port Mourant with former West Indies captain Ramnaresh Sarwan expected to feature, Albion / Rose Hall Town is expected to have Kemo Paul, New Amsterdam/ Canje will have Shimron Hetmyer and West Berbice / Blairmont combine which is expected to include Tevin Imlach.
The organisers have also earmarked a number of projects that will benefit from the venture which will include assisting with the development of Sports in the Region, assist two first division clubs, two orphanages, two schools in Berbice among other ventures. The organisers have also decided to put aside some money to assist in some needy cause in case of health.
The budget for the activity was presented by BCCDA Treasurer Chris Hicks which pegged the expenses at $400,000.
The winning team is expected to pocket $100,000 the runner up $50,000 while the man of the match will collect $10,000.
A number of other side attractions are expected to form a part of the programme. The event is also expected to form part of the Ministry of Tourism, Industry and Commerce yearly event. (Samuel Whyte)
