In support of former footballers

Dear Editor,
I am heartened that the Guyana Football Federation has issued a press release which was published in your newspaper (01. 04. 16). This was related to a claim by former national player Godfrey “Poulis” Norville that the Wayne Forde led administration have ceased monthly financial assistance to himself and Birdette Marshall, another former national player both of whom are visually impaired This claim was also published in the previous day’s edition. However, before I attempt to divulge the harsh but sad realities of the situation, may I most definitely that it’s not an obligation but rather a concession, which is what “Poulis” and others of his ilk must fully comprehend. Any incoming administration/executive of an organisation, first and foremost, deals with inherent debt (s) as a front burner issue and concessions later”. In a fragile economy such as ours, where sponsorship/donations on an annual basis can’t match GUY $50 M over a 4 year period much less on an annual basis compatible to the annual grant facilitated by FIFA of US$250,000. Compulsory monthly expenses consisting of utility bills, salaries, stipends, mortgage, maintenance and purchase of other items etc have to be dealt with. Additionally, the occasional servicing of equipment and annual auditing Fees can’t be overlooked.
As a consequence, I would agree that a more holistic approach is needed with all affiliates participating, at an appropriate forum (General Council Meeting), with the issue subjected to brain storming with additional names with various ailments/disabilities forthcoming. By having such an exercise within the Annual Budget of Expenditure, a fixed sum for a number of former national players will be budgeted. Once again “Poulis” must fully comprehend this and possibly put forward a strong case for retroactive payment.
Meanwhile the issue of players’ identification cards for former nationals, forty (40) years and over with a minimum of ten (10) International matches, must also be a priority, to be facilitated at the General Council Meeting. Administrators, Coaches and Referees all of whom have served the nation’s football with distinction in the past must be entertained. In the area of coaching, Peter “Michelin” Gulliver and Alan Walker readily come to mind. So too are George Grimes and Clifton Bobb for refereeing. Administratively, the list would be long, but all former Presidents of the GFF cannot be overlooked. Special mention must also be made of Lawrence “Sparrow” Griffith, Alan La Rose, Duane Lovell, Marlan Cole, Troy Mendonca, Oliver Hinckson and I. In leaving me for last, I must say for long and dedicated service, at times beyond the normal call of duty, spanning a period of 28 years (1982-2010) is truly deserving of a pass. If the powers that be decide otherwise, then with that being their option it would be respected and I will continue to stay away. Least before I forget, Klass’ gesture of goodwill being the GFF President at the time was mostly self-funded. While former Director, NSC, Neil Kumar also contributed financially to Poulis on behalf of the Commission.
