Guyana to host Canada’s Men’s EXCEL U-23 for historic int. friendly
Advances 23 places in latest FIFA World Rankings
Guyana is set to host the Canadian National Men’s EXCEL U-23 Team in an International Friendly on Sunday, May 15, 2016 at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence. This game is scheduled to begin at 19:00hrs and is part of the Government of Guyana’s 50th Jubilee celebrations.
The Golden Jaguars following their 7-0 demolition of Anguilla at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence on March 22nd.
It is being facilitated by GFF’s International Ambassador and former International Football Player / Canadian Hall of Famer, Mr. Alex Bunbury.
According to the Canadian Soccer Association website, the match has been organised in keeping with their emphasis on players development and will feature players born 1993 or later.
It further stated that, “the Canada camp serves as an important step in accumulating experience for some of the nation’s young, exceptional players, all with an eye towards Canada’s Men’s National Team and the road to Russia 2018 and beyond. The squad of selected players will be announced in early May.”
Meanwhile, Guyana has moved twenty-three places up the FIFA Men’s world rankings to one hundred and thirty-three (133) following the Golden Jaguars’ defeat of Anguilla and Puerto Rico in Round 1 of the Caribbean Football Union 2016 Scotiabank Men’s Caribbean Cup games held in Guyana and Puerto Rico on 22nd and 29th March, 2016 respectively.
This ranking was released today by FIFA and demonstrates that the Guyana National Men’s Team is no longer a force to be taken lightly within Caribbean Football Union (CFU), CONCACAF and the world of football.
In an invited comment, President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF), Mr. Wayne Forde, has expressed his satisfaction with this movement and extended congratulations to the management and players.
“I’m indeed very happy and exceptionally proud of the players, the coaching staff and the management team for the tremendous work they’ve been doing with that team. The senior male team represents a brand and it’s a brand that the Executive Committee of the Guyana Football Federation will manage very carefully. We believe that is the brand that will position Guyana on the international stage to our rightful place so I want to encourage the nation to join me in extending a heartfelt thank you to the guys for putting in the hard work that they have over the past three international engagements and to encourage them to strive to do better as we go forward in the Caribbean Football Union’s Scotiabank Caribbean Cup.”
Guyana’s next engagement in the Caribbean Football Union’s 2016 Scotiabank Men’s Caribbean Cup is in June against Curacao, followed by the United States Virgin Islands.
