A letter was published in the Kaieteur News captioned, “Eric Phillips says this lady is a racist”, written by Eric Phillips, accusing the, of being a racist.
During a press conference hosted by the PPP/C, the party’s Chief Whip, Gail Teixeira, accused two independent media houses of bias in their reporting. She expounded that several letters, including hers, would have been sent to the editors of Kaieteur News and Stabroek News in response to letters by Eric Phillips. However, these letters never made it to publication and if they did, they were “butchered” to a point where they no longer made any sense.
She also said publicly on a television programme yesterday that she has been receiving complaints from persons who were desirous of responding to Phillips, but their letters were never published.
The Chief Whip said that Phillips was given an opportunity to share his concerns since four of his letters would have been published thus far and the letters from other persons responding to him were not.
Teixeira said that editors have a responsibility to remove content that would be seen as libellous or defamatory, but editors should not be “shifting paragraphs and slashing letters”.
Letter Editor’s note: The Letters Department has never received any letter from Ms. Gail Teixeira prior to a 4000-word letter she sent, nor has it received any letter critical to Mr. Philips thus far. Additionally, we do not carry letters that are 4,000 words in length because of space constraint. The publication of a 4,000-word letter will also result in the shutting out of other letters. This is standard editing throughout the world of journalism.
