Dear Editor,
It is of utter importance that the record is set straight about utterances made by Team Benschop’s Campaign Manager, Ronson Gray February 7, in the Kaieteur Newspaper, slamming the Mayor and City Council in what appears to be a record of poor performance.
I regret to make it my personal responsibility to have to respond to this writer especially when his attack is grounded in cheap campaigning tactics, and at a time when the Council is working on its already tainted image.
It is no secret that the Council has had grave challenges in fulfilling its obligations to the public. However time must not be wasted on reminiscing on the atrocities committed by the past Administration against this City through the strangulation of the Municipality. Mr. Gray must not pretend like he took a trip to Mars and say things like restoration of public structures are now being done just in time for the Local Government Elections. He must have noticed that massive cleaning, rehabilitation and revitalization works commenced immediately after the change in central governance.
It is now that the Council can say firmly that it is able to provide its services and fully manage the city. As funny as it may sound, I know that the Mayor and Councillors must feel proud being able to clean more than a drain or two; to build lovely social parks, restore historic structures and other public features.
The former government promised on several occasions to assist the Council with the restoration of not only the Kitty Market, but the Stabroek Market also. The Council waited for this assistance that never came since the financial and developmental decapitation of the Municipality was unfortunately an orchestrated political deed. Yet, Mr. Gray omits this.
The M&CC should not have to stick its head in the sand about it. They must be cognizant that Local Government Election will see the agency being used as a campaign punching bag and a tool of ridicule. The Council has been resilient against the worst. Despite the failure to hold LGE over the years and blatant political interference, the Georgetown Municipality has survived.
All that is asked of Mr. Gray “in this new dispensation,” is to desist from further destroying the Council’s image, especially when he refuses to put the deterioration of this Municipality and the City in context
George Marks.
