Dear Editor,
Permit me space in your daily to give my bit about the marvelous job the Mayor and City Council has been performing since the change of government. I’ve heard the Council’s excuse time and time again about political interference being the reason why they were not performing, and for a very long time Georgetown residents suffered, living with clogged drains, flooding, dirty, garbage- ridden streets, vagrant invasion, and the list continued. I often wondered why this was happening, because we had a Government and a Council in place. Both sides blamed each other, but I think now it is plain to see who had been stifling whom. I have come to believe now that the former government played a most vital role in the deliberate degradation of the Capital. After all, they never enjoyed Georgetown’s support.
Nonetheless change is here and I am proud to be living in the city. I am still stunned at the beauty which was hidden under all that filth. I am also still very surprised at the short time the Council took to pull this off. There are major changes taking place and work is still ongoing in every corner of the city. The once abandoned, neglected Merriman’s Mall is now alive, fancy and vibrant. I see many families now go to the newly built playground. Such a major child recreational feature has never been promoted on this scale in the city. And the beautiful thing is that even poor families can now regularly enjoy such a high quality experience. I even see other playgrounds and recreational areas being constructed in small communities. The one in my Roxanne Burnham Gardens area is still under construction but I already like what I see. Editor, I can go on and on about the revitalizing and beautifying, cleaning and clearing, (the fact that I can now see the bottom of a gutter) the attempts to fix the bus stop situation, the congestion situation, parking, buildings, communities etc. etc. One thing is most clear is that change has come for Georgetown. Kudos to the Mayor and City Council. Congratulations to Mr. Royston King and his team. If not all, at least this citizen is rooting for you and I hope to provide useful ideas in my next letter
