A jail sentence of two years was yesterday handed to an East Ruimveldt resident after he admitted
Kevin Harris
to robbing a man of his cell phone.
Kevin Harris, 37, of 309 East Ruimveldt, Georgetown pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on December 11, at Georgetown, he robbed Pertab Mangal of one cellular phone valued $4,000. During the course of the robbery the court was told that Harris made use of personal violence to the victim.
Police Prosecutor, Corporal Deniro Jones, told the court that on the day in question, at about 06:30hrs, Mangal was walking along Barr Street, Kitty, when Harris rode up on a bicycle and dealt him several slaps to the face.
Jones said that the assailant demanded Mangal to hand over his valuables. He then reached into the man’s pocket, took out the cell phone and made good his escape on the bicycle. The prosecutor explained that the victim reported the matter to the Kitty Police Station. He said that the lawmen and Mangal returned to the area of the crime and carried out a search. Mangal positively pointed out Harris and he was arrested and charged.
Jones said that while at the Police station, the phone was found in Harris’s crotch, and Mangal subsequently identified the item as belonging to him.
When given a chance to explain his side of the story, Harris told Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan that Mangal owes him money and he merely took away the man’s phone as security. He claimed that he had “represented Mangal” sometime and the man had promised to give him $2,500. Harris went on to say that he was really in need of the money at the time.
However, Mangal stated emphatically that he had never seen Harris before.
