Dear Editor,
Devanand Bhagwan’s letter in your newspaper of December 10th (“Wesleyan pastor is guilty Pharisaic blindness”), aptly shows how religion today can divide people and spread hatred and enmity, rather than love and respect among persons of different religious backgrounds. We have seen what this kind of religious mindset has led to in the Middle East. There are many religious fanatics who believe that their way is the only way to God, and everyone else is doomed to the fires of hell. This belief has caused so many religious wars especially between Christians and Muslims.
Devanand Bhagwan must be commended for his stand. Yet, i am surprised that despite his criticism of the pastor’s action, he has expressed his desire to go to a Hindu temple to sing about Jesus. He should know that Jesus is not a diety of worship in Hinduism. Hence, why not sing about Rama and Krishna’s love instead. It seems to me that he will be adding insult to injury should he do this.
I would like remind those who seek to propagate Christianity, of some of Jesus’ sayings:
1) “I have come not, but for the lost sheep of Israel”
2) Jesus to his disciples, “Go not in the way of the Gentiles or the Samaritans but to the lost sheep of Israel”
Since when have all the nations of the world become the lost sheep of Israel. Apostle Paul who was a fanatic after conversion to Christianity (like many converts today) changed what Jesus said and told his followers to go to all the nations of the nation of the world to preach.
There is also a story in the bible where a gentile woman went to Jesus to heal her sick daughter and this is what he said; “Shall a man take bread from his hungry children and give to the dog?”The gentile woman replied that even the dog is entitled to scraps from the master’s table. Jesus thought about what she said and replied, “Go your faith has healed your child”. This incident goes to show that even Jesus himself felt that his powers of healing were for his own people.
Bhagwan also made the statement that Christians need to know that God is the God of all peoples and cultures. However this statement is not supported in the Bible. The god of the old testament had a chosen people, the Israelites and for the most part the other nations were his and the Israelite’s enemies. In the old testament of the Bible, one reads of the many wars instigated by this god. Slavery was also practised by him. Quite, a few times in the Bible he gave the Israelites into slavery to their enemies when the disobeyed him. Today many persons preach what is not in the scriptures or they have their own interpretation of the scriptures
