The up and coming Union-Renaissance No53 Sports Club Volleyball team made a major move forward in the volleyball arena in Berbice when they won the 5th annual Balram Shane Memorial Volleyball Competition which was held on Sunday last at the Port Mourant Community Centre Multiplex court. Four teams participated in the competition due to a number of reasons. The teams that participated in the competition were Union-Renaissance Sports Club, PMTC No1 and PMTC No2 and Tain, Corentyne.
In the final Union-Renaissance Sports Club got the better of PMTC No2 by (2-0) the scores being 20-18, 20-17 after a keen battle.
Results for earlier games saw Tain edging PMTC No1 (2-1); Union-Renaissance No53 Sports Club then defeated PMTC No2 (2-0), a win which guaranteed them a place in the final. PMTC No 2 then edged Tain (2-1) to book their place in the final.
The tournament was affected due to the unavailability of a number of teams and players. The Port Mourant Training Centre Alumni team was overseas participating in an International competition. At the same time a Berbice team was participating in the Tradewind Tankers International competition in Demerara.
Sponsor Mr. Deonarine Balram in his remarks at the opening ceremony, expressed some dissatisfaction with the lack of turnout of the teams. He was however pleased with the level of play and the enthusiasm of the young players and promised to sponsor the competition again in 2016.
At the presentation ceremony held immediately after the finals, Mr. Balram congratulated the players for their good performances and handed out cash incentives to all the teams that participated.
The winning Union-Renaissance Sports Club of #53 team collected $20,000 and the Balram Shane Memorial Trophy. All the other teams that participated were presented with $10,000 each by the sponsor. (Samuel Whyte)
