Shillingford’s 6-107 leads Volcanoes fight back
Dominican off-spinner Shane Shillingford grabbed 6-107 on the second day of the first round of the WICB PCL four-day First-Class Franchise between the Windwards Volcanoes and defending Champions Guyana Jaguars at Providence yesterday.
The Jaguars, from their overnight 287-4, lost six wickets for 61 runs after Rajendra Chandrika was dismissed at 301-5, to be all out for 362 just after Lunch.
By the close the Volcanoes had reached 127-2 and although the visitors are still 235 adrift of the Jaguars’ total they enjoyed the better of the exchanges on a rain affected day which was prematurely ended by bad light with 16 minutes remaining.
Chandrika who began the day on 140 added just six runs before he was LBW to Mervin Matthews after batting for 425 minutes, 333 balls with 21 fours to trigger a collapse which was briefly halted Chris Barnwell’s 28 as Shillingford’s 30th five-wicket haul did the damage for Volcanoes.
Raymon Reifer, who hit two sixes and a four in 17 and Steven Jacobs, who was taken at short leg off Shillingford, reached double figures yesterday in overcast conditions.
Miles Bascombe (11) and Tyrone Theophile (46) put on 29 for the first wicket before Jacobs produced a perfect off-break which was given some air to drag Bascombe forward before pitching just outside off stump and turned between bat and pad as the Vincentian was bowled.
Theophile, who played some delightful shots on the fast outfield, reached the boundary seven times and cleared it once before he played across the line and was LBW to Barnwell at 78-2.
Devon Smith, the 34 year-old Grenadian with 25 First-Class hundreds including one at Test level, was forced to bat at three since he was off the field for more than 15 minutes during the Jaguars’ innings.
Smith (35*) in his 99th First-Class game and St Lucian Keddy Lesporis (26*) put together 49 for the third wicket by the close against some disciplined bowling on a flat pitch with Smith, who has the second most Regional First-Class centuries, one less than the Region’s leading centurion (Stuart Williams 20), will resume today when the match is scheduled to commence at 09:16hrs. (Sean Devers).
