Residents of the Budhan Housing Scheme in West Canje, East Berbice should be receiving potable water for the first time before Christmas.
This assurance was given to the residents by Chief Executive of the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Dr. Richard Van West-Charles at a community meeting held on Thursday between the CEO and residents of the Scheme and attended by Region Six Chairman, David Armogan.
Dr. Van West Charles outlined a programme which will result in residents receiving water for the first time since the creation of the housing development, over 10 years ago. The scheme is located on the outskirts of New Amsterdam, in West Canje Berbice.
Speaking to residents in the presence of the Regional Chairman, housing developers of the scheme and GWI Officials, Dr. Van-West Charles stated that he was concerned about the lack of water within the community especially with the large number of families with young children.
“Our mandate is to ensure that every citizen of this country has access to safe water,” stated the GWI Chief Executive Officer. “Therefore GWI is proposing that every resident sign a contract with the company to pay for their water service connections over an eight month period. We understand the financial strain of the families living in the scheme so we will allow a long period for residents to pay for their service in small, affordable amounts.”
The Chief Executive Officer explained further that since it is a private housing scheme, residents will be charged for the service connection but will be afforded the convenience of paying in small installments.
The proposal was met with applause from the residents who attended the meeting. Regional Chairman David Armogan commended Dr. Van West-Charles on his initiative since prior attempts were made during the tenure of the previous administration to provide the scheme with water service but with no success.
