The first ever staged Guyana Marathon received a boost on Wednesday when
telephone giants GTT handed over $1million to the organisers of the event, at its Brickdam Head Office.
According to PRO Alison Parker, the money will go towards offsetting expenses to host the event which will be staged at Santa Aratak Mission on Saturday, November 14.
Parker in her remarks said that the company is pleased to be on board the event, adding that it provides a great opportunity to create awareness about the Santa Aratak Mission. One of the organisers, Sevak Tsaturyan, welcomed GTT onboard, noting that they are grateful for the support.
Commenting on the preparations for the event, Tsaturyan said that it is going well and he expects a fully subscribed field which will include 20 employees from GTT. The day’s activities will see the marathon starting at 08:00hrs, the half-marathon one hour later, while the 10k commences at 10:00hrs.
Although the event attracts an entrance fee for athletes to become eligible to compete, the top performers will not receive cash, but tokens and medals, according to Tsaturyan. He revealed that the proceeds from the event will be presented to the community of Santa Aratak Mission.
Over 100 local and foreign athletes have already confirmed participation and among them are Guyana distance king Cleveland Forde, Kelvin Johnson and Alika Morgan.
