Dear Editor,
Thanks for giving me this opportunity once again to raise a concern that has been engaging my mind for some time. Almost a year and a half ago, the Guyana Police Force, in its effort to regain public trust, launched several youth programmes across the country. While I applaud the initiative, I am a bit worried that all might not be well with the administration of the programmes especially when it comes to accountability.
My concern is directly focused on the police A Division, of which I am a part of. I know for a fact that the Division, through the Commander, has received several donations in cash and items amounting to millions of dollars to aid in the running of the youth programmes. Is it too much to ask the Commander how much money he has received so far from the previous government, the office of the Commissioner and the business community for the projects.
Besides, I believe that with the police short off manpower by about fifty percent, it would be wise to reduce the number of police ranks who are actually running these youth programmes.
Shouldn’t the ministry responsible for youth be tasked with this venture and let the police concentrate their efforts more towards actually patrolling and fighting crime?
With all the talk of forensic audit, I would like to one done with regards to the police youth programmes, especially in A Division. It would certainly show if we are getting value for our money. Cobeer Persaud
