Dear Editor,
The frequent reports, emanating not only from the man in the street but also from senior government functionaries, of inadequate healthcare delivery beg the need for Guyana to have its first 3 to 5- star rated health care facility, a facility which can be accredited by an international healthcare accreditation agency such as the American based Joint Commission for the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
From my health care facilities engineering experience a 200-bed such facility, fully equipped ready to operate, will cost about US$120 to US$200 million. News media report that a 5-star such facility is presently under construction in Jamaica at a cost of US$200 million.
The financing of such a facility can be explored as a joint venture among a consortium of physicians, national and international health care corporations, government, and other private entities. Patient services will most likely have to paid for through health insurance and/or out of pocket.
The environment of care standards for today’s health care facilities design and construction have evolved into specialized fields, which fields are absent in most of our existing health care facilities. Hence my choice of a new facility as opposed to costly upgrades. The location of the new facility will, also, be of prime importance. With the development thrust towards the interior my choice of site will be in the Timehri area. Abraham David
