While the Guyana Football Federation is intent on enhancing the continued development of football and its coaches country-wide, a three days training session mainly to train young upcoming Essequibo referees was held in Region Two, starting on Friday. The programme was completed yesterday afternoon.
The sessions were held at the Oasis Hotel at Queenstown, Essequibo. Stanley Lancaster, senior referees official, explained that the training of referees in Essequibo and other parts of Guyana including Linden, Georgetown and yet to be held training sessions in Bartica and Lethem, is intended to enhance the quality of officiating the game locally.
Lancaster mentioned that the referees are being trained in all seventeen laws and interpretation of the game after which they would be evaluated and be tested under a beginners test. “Just the first, but not the last,” he noted.
The referee’s official said that a small body would be developed after the training and that body would be in charge of managing the local referees training as well as assessing that body.
Lancaster mentioned that training kits and Fifa tops would be donated to the local body in Essequibo. He mentioned too that the Guyana Football Federation will be issuing branded “Admiral” uniforms to the new officials.
Essequibian Colin Belfield, who has been a referee for almost two years, was named among the training personnel. Essequibo has ten teams which play seasonal football.
Lancaster was assisted by Abdulla Hamid during the Essequibo programme.
A call has been made for business organizations to support football in the area. (Yannason Duncan)
