The Cricket Guyana Inc (CGI) applied for a USD account through Scotia Bank Guyana since October last year. According to a source close to the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB), a request was made by the Bank of Guyana, through Scotia Bank, for further information late last year and this was promptly provided. Apparently the application was processed by the Bank of Guyana and forwarded to the finance Minister Ashni Singh for his approval.
However a source close to the GCB stated that the Finance Minister apparently blocked the application to establish the account primarily intended to facilitate the payment of the national contracted cricketers and associated expenses and all efforts by Scotia Bank and the Cricket Board officials to secure the approval have proven futile.
The source of the funding is WICB and is a standard amount paid to all the Territorial franchises and this can easily be verified.
Kaieteur Sport was provided with correspondence written by Scotia Bank enquiring from Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh about the status of the application and also the Bank’s response to the Cricket authority stating that they are awaiting the minister’s response. The Minister has failed to respond and almost seven months have elapsed since the application was made.
A GCB source also informed that Sports Minister Dr. Frank Anthony has, since last year, refused to grant any concessions to the GCB. Hence, all cricket equipment for the Schools’ cricket programme, Grassroots and kiddies’ cricket was subjected to duty and taxes. All cricket teams, inclusive of the youth teams, leaving Guyana also have to pay airport departure taxes as Minister Anthony has not yet signed the request for concessions sent by the GCB.
Officials of Cricket Guy Inc. and the Guyana Cricket Board have said that they will forge ahead regardless to ensure that the Cricketers stay focused while the entities work to resolve this newest issue.
